Welcome to El Cerrito- Spanish for “The Little Hill”! Many people don’t know, but El Cerrito was founded by refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It’s a little city sandwiched between Albany and Richmond with only 3.67 square miles and a population of only 25,280 people. It is a lot less dense than its neighboring cities, but still has a lot of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and parks. Many young professionals and retirees live in El Cerrito.
The top 3 things in El Cerrito that the residents love, coming in at number one, is the small town feeling. Despite being close to Berkeley and Oakland, you almost get the feeling that you are in your own little bubble. Most residents in town own their homes versus rent and the homes tend to have a unique architectural style that draws in home buyers from all over. Living in El Cerrito offers residents a dense suburban feel.
Number 2 on the list, is the access too transportation. There are 2 BART stations in El Cerrito, one located right in the center and another on the north side. There are also a lot of ac transit busses to get around town and incredibly easy highway access. Making it easy to get around to all parts of the Bay Area!

And 3rd on the list is the access to the outdoors. El Cerrito’s Hillside Natural Area offers spectacular views of the city and is a great place for hikers. The SF Bay Trail is nearby which is a walking/ biking trail that runs from Emeryville to Berkeley and then all the way north to Hercules. For the dog lovers you have easy access to Point Isabel Dog Park, where your furry friends can run off leash into the water.

In the center of it all is El Cerrito Plaza which is a very large shopping mall. Here you will find all of your everyday needs with notable stores like Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, Ross and CVS. There are also other smaller franchisers and restaurants like Burgerim, Yammy Sushi, and Wingstop. It’s located diagonally from El Cerrito BART so you can grab your dinner or groceries on your way home from BART. This is truly the one stop shop kind of deal!
For our foodie lovers, El Cerrito has become quite the epicurean scene over the last few years. San Pablo Ave has filled up with top rated restaurants, drink venues, and coffee shops! For cozy breakfast with hospitality, go to H&J’s Restaurant. For a fulfilling lunch/dinner, stop by Little Kathmandu or Zomsa for delicious Nepalese food and Larb Thai Food & Tapas for yummy Thai food. If you love that perfectly made coffee in the morning, pick up your organic coffee at Well Grounded Tea & Coffee Bar, or stop by Tala Coffee & Tea for their exceptionally tasty coffee! A trip to El Mono for Puruvian food is always a must! Those in the mood for a drink, Mel-O-Dee Cocktails has a drink waiting for you, they offer a full bar with karaoke and sports! You also need to stop at Elevation 66 Brewing Company for the best bar/brewery food!
